El Salvador becomes the first country in the world in which Bitcoin becomes a legal tender cryptocurrency, but not without controversy
The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador approved on June 9, 2021, a law that turns bitcoin into legal currency in El Salvador. It is the first country to offer such support to cryptocurrency. This law obliges businesses and companies to accept bitcoin as a means of payment
The approval of bitcoin has had an uneven acceptance on Twitter, where the positions found were evident. While crypto believers celebrated this historic milestone, citizens of El Salvador — criticized that this law was much less important than other measures that should be passed in other areas.
Nayib Bukele continued with this law, as he explained approximately 70% of the population did not have access to traditional financial services. This is how cryptocurrencies have been a way for the unbanked population to have an alternative when it comes to accessing financial services.
