Chip scanning allowed for the online identification process in Switzerland

Tuesday, 18 May, 2021

The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA now allows for chip scanning for the online identification process in Switzerland to further automate identification procedures and take advantage of developing technology and possibilities created by biometric passports. From 1st June 2021, financial intermediaries will be legally permitted to scan chips found in biometric identity documents, and companies will be able to use geolocation to further confirm one’s identity based on one’s address. At the same time, FINMA decided that automatic video-based identification followed by a manual verification is not secure enough on its own, so it is necessary to use chip scanning or bank transfers to confirm one’s identity online.
